How to create custom themes in RobinPad

How to create custom themes in RobinPad

In RobinPad, you can change the interface style to create fully customized themes.

In this post, I will walk you through how to do it step by step, it's super easy.

Technical considerations

To preserve performance and avoid cluttering the interface, all custom images added to a theme are automatically converted and compressed into ".webp" format. Everything is processed and stored in your browser; nothing is sent to any server. RobinPad runs entirely locally.

Below you can download a .zip file containing:

Theme components

Desk background

  • Dimensions: 2400x1600px
  • Formats: jpg, png, webp

This is the background surface that simulates the desk beneath your paper. Recommended dimensions:

Paper texture

theme-paper-texture.jpg

  • Dimensions: 2560x1440px
  • Formats: jpg, png, webp.

It is applied in "multiply" blend mode over the drawing canvas so the paint naturally interacts with the texture. Multiply mode turns white areas transparent while preserving the opacity of darker values.

Feel free to get creative: use paper textures with different tones, varied grains, and more, just keep in mind that tinted textures will affect how colors mix. For a realistic paper look, the best approach is to use a grayscale texture and adjust the page color via settings or by painting a base layer.

Scenic shadow

  • Dimensions: 2400x1600px
  • Formats: jpg, png, webp.

Just like the paper texture, the scenic shadow is also applied in multiply mode. Using a grayscale image is recommended to produce a natural shading effect.

In this section, you can fine-tune shadow opacity with the slider, allowing you to balance the intensity if your imported image has too much contrast.

Horizontal and vertical interface

  • Horizontal dimensions: 1500x150px
  • Vertical dimensions: 150x1500px
  • Formats: jpg, png, webp.

These textures are applied to both window headers and menu bars.

The easiest approach is to create the horizontal texture and rotate it for vertical bars, but you can also design unique textures for each if you want more visual variety across the interface.

Front and back cover

  • Dimensions: 1500x1500px
  • Formats: jpg, png, webp.

This image is used in the flipbook preview mode. It is the most delicate asset to configure, as it must adapt cleanly to any notebook format.

Keep in mind that if you want certain graphic elements to stay visible across all aspect ratios, place them within the center safe area. That area remains centered while the outer edges are cropped based on the selected format.

Washi tape

  • Dimensions: 512x1512px
  • Formats: jpg, png, webp.

Personally, this is my favorite part to create. You can make them directly in RobinPad by choosing the square format, painting your artwork, and applying it right from the Washi Tape panel, it will be added to your custom theme automatically.

You can also craft your patterns in any external painting or editing software and import the image into RobinPad.

Remember that washi tape acts as a repeating pattern: your image will tile seamlessly along the tape length. You will see as you create new designs that simple shapes and high contrast yield the best results.

Cursor

theme-cursor.jpg

  • Dimensions: 200x200px
  • Formats: png, webp

The cursor needs to be an object with a transparent background to function properly, with the anchor point at the top-left corner so it acts as a precise pointer. Beyond that, feel free to test, experiment, and get creative!
